Rolling as a “ continuing collision ”

چکیده
We show that two basic mechanical processes, the collision of particles and rolling motion of a sphere on a plane, are intimately related. According to our recent findings, the restitution coefficient for colliding spherical particles ǫ, which characterizes the energy loss upon collision, is directly related to the rolling friction coefficient μroll for a viscous sphere on a hard plane. We quantify both coefficients in terms of material constants which allow to determine either of them provided the other is known. This relation between the coefficients may give rise to a novel experimental technique to determine alternatively the coefficient of restitution or the coefficient of rolling friction.

Collision-based energetic comparison of rolling and hopping over obstacles
Locomotion of machines and robots operating in rough terrain is strongly influenced by the mechanics of the ground-machine interactions. A rolling wheel in terrain with obstacles is subject to collisional energy losses, which is governed by mechanics comparable to hopping or walking locomotion. Here we investigate the energetic cost associated with overcoming an obstacle for rolling and hopping...
متن کاملRocking and rolling: a can that appears to rock might actually roll.
A beer bottle or soda can on a table, when slightly tipped and released, falls to an upright position and then rocks up to a somewhat opposite tilt. Superficially this rocking motion involves a collision when the flat circular base of the container slaps the table before rocking up to the opposite tilt. A keen eye notices that the after-slap rising tilt is not generally just diametrically oppos...
متن کاملKinetic Collision Detection for Balls Rolling on a Plane
This abstract presents a first step towards kinetic collision detection in 3 dimensions. In particular, we design a compact and responsive kinetic data structure (KDS) for detecting collisions between n balls of arbitrary sizes rolling on a plane. The KDS has size O(n log n) and can handle events in O(log n) time. The structure processes O(n) events in the worst case, assuming that the objects ...

متن کاملSimulating rolling and colliding balls on freeform surfaces with friction
We introduce an interactive REAL-TIME simulation of rolling balls on freeform parametric surfaces. The simulation includes solid and hollow balls with different size, moment of inertia, slip, rolling friction, collision detection and handling. We consider examples with several hundred balls of different types rolling and colliding on a freeform surface limited by a closed boundary set of walls....
